20-01-2004 World Cup Competition Heats up

Young Queensland showjumper Tim Amitrano has moved into second position on the Australian World Cup leaderboard, behind NSW rider Chris Chugg, following a strong performance in Dapto NSW at the weekend.

Despite Chugg winning the class on Kayak van Get Cravenhof , Diamond B Ego (who placed 5th in the class) was his nominated horse, meaning world cup points went to Amitrano on Mr Innocent.

The stage is now set for a thrilling end to the 2003-2004 World Cup series, with several riders still in contention. The final scoring becomes somewhat complex, as despite there being 18 qualifiers this season, it is only the best 9 scores from each rider that are tallied together towards their final standings.

Following Chugg and Amitrano on the leaderboard is Robert Agnew from Victoria, and then Andrew Inglis and Amanda Madigan.

There are now just 3 rounds left in the Australian league, with the scenic seaside township of Kiama next up on January 24.

A week later, it’s the big one - the double-header at the Olympic venue (Sydney International Equestrian Centre) Horsley Park, on January 30 and February 1st. A Table C class will be the World Cup Qualifier on the Friday, whilst Sunday’s World Cup will be a Grand Prix event, and points earned will be multiplied by 1.5.

The events at Horsley Park will feature Venezuelan course designer Leopoldo Palacious who officiated at the Sydney Olympics, and will be the Technical Delegate for showjumping at Athens later in the year. As well as being the final round of the current World Cup series, the event will also be the only chance Australia’s showjumpers will have on home soil, to qualify for the Athens Olympic Games.
