May 2th 2004 Frenchman wins the World Cup Final in Milan
Bruno Broucqsault became the first Frenchman to claim the World Cup title when, his 13 year-old gelding Dileme de Cephe, snatched victory in a thrilling finish to the Sony Ericsson FEI World Cup Jumping Final in Milan.
Germany’s Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum was second, denied a two-way jump off with the 45 year-old French rider by what seemed like nothing short of massive injustice. After a brilliant clear first-round effort that was nothing short of perfection, a single rail came down in the second-round that cost her dearly.
Markus Fuchs picked up just four faults on this final day with Tinka’s Boy to place third ahead of Eugenie Angot and Cigale du Tallis from France. Angot came into competition on day three with 9 penalty points but was the only other rider to manage double clear rounds. Just four horse-and-rider combinations completed the first track without penalty as big fences and tricky distances took their toll.
Meredith said afterwards "the first round today was very difficult – every fence came up quickly after fence two and there were extremely technical distances with questions about scope and carefulness – all the questions a good course should have".
Many of the early runners tried to tackle the distance from the wall at fence two to the oxer at fence three on four forward strides but it became clear that five shorter strides was more suitable for most, as the front bar of the oxer fell time and time again, while the line from the oxer at five to the double at six also proved a bit of a puzzle. A very forward four strides left a lot of the horses too flat at the next fence while it seemed almost impossible for many to shorten enough to put in five.
Laura Kraut however literally came unstuck at the very first fence, a triple bar, when the horse seemed a little deep and, for the second time this weekend, decided to stop. However fellow-American, Richard Spooner, put the record straight when producing the first clear round. There are some horses that thrive on a challenge and, like all the best Irish-breds, the bay gelding simply jumped his heart out despite some dangerous moments and this partnership crossed the line to a storm of applause as the crowd recognised the courage of both horse and rider.
Shutterfly had not made a mistake all weekend and in fact Meredith’s opening effort on this final day was stunning. Her eye for a stride had been spot-on all weekend and Shutterfly seemed calmer and more confident than ever but, when meeting that same oxer at five a little deep, the gelding put in a big effort which, as Meredith explained left them long to the first element of the following double and there was a gasp of disbelief when it fell.
Delighted but perhaps somewhat shell-shocked at finding himself the newly-crowned FEI World Cup Jumping Champion, Bruno is clearly not going to let this success go to his head. When asked how he felt about his historic victory he commented "I’m just still little Bruno, nothing changes. I am very happy. When I came here I hoped to finish in the top five but I never expected to win so I want to thank everyone who has helped and supported me here".
It certainly was not the result that had been expected but Markus Fuchs said "we often have surprises in our sport. Two days ago I was impressed with Bruno’s confidence when he said he would not feel the pressure going into the last day – this is a big, big performance and I would like to congratulate him".
Under the most extreme pressure Bruno and Dileme de Cephe never faltered in their absolute faith in one another and France has now found another super-hero to further boost the incredible run of French form on the international stage.

Canadian Team Named for CSIO**** Wellington Nations’ Cup
Ottawa, Ontario - The third annual $50,000 Samsung Nations’ Cup, Presented by CN, will be held in Wellington, Florida, during the Winter Equestrian Festival and once again Canada will be represented.
In this year’s Nation’s Cup competition, one of the featured highlights of the international CSIO**** Wellington, the Canadian Team will be striving for victory. A veteran Canadian Show Jumping Team will be comprised of Harold Chopping originally from Toronto, ON, and now based in Hampton Falls, NH, Eric Lamaze of Schomberg, ON, Ian Millar of Perth, ON, and Ainsley Vince of Milton, ON.
Chopping and Kathleen, a Holsteiner mare owned by Chopping and Silver Oak Farm, placed seventh in the $75,000 PDP Capital Master Cup at the CSI*** PDP Capital Wellington Masters in Wellington, FL, on Feb. 29, 2003.
As a member of the Canadian contingent in the past two Nations’ Cup events held in Wellington, Lamaze recently placed fourth on Tempete V/H Lindehof in the $50,000 Kilkenny Cup. On February 1, the pair also won the $35,000 FARR XTN Grand Prix Of Palm Beach during the CSI** Nutrena/Western Hay Wellington Classic.
A seven-time Olympian, Millar has had a successful winter season in Florida. In the $25,000 WEF Challenge Cup Series Round V at the PDP Capital Wellington Masters on February 26, 2004, Millar rode Promise Me, a Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Millar Brooke Farm Ltd, to a third place finish. He also guided Scotia Farms’ Sweet Dreams to a third place in $50,000 HITS Grand Prix at the HITS II Ocala Winter Festival on Feb. 22. Again with Promise Me, Millar enjoyed victory in the $50,000 EMO Grand Prix held February 15, during the HITS I Ocala Winter Classic in Ocala, FL.
Vince recently topped the 2003 Canadian World Cup League Standings following a stellar season aboard her two mounts, Catch 22, a Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Trinity Farm, and the 3E Syndicate’s Dutch Warmblood stallion, Kafka.
“Our team contains veteran riders on fantastic horses,” notes Danny Foster, Chair of the Selection Committee. “We are very confident that we will have a great team.”
Argentina, Australia, Canada, Colombia, France, Ireland, Mexico, Venezuela, and two-time defending champions, the United States, will vie for top honours in the prestigious team competition. The Samsung Nations’ Cup, Presented by CN, will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 12. As a warm-up to the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, the event will be held on the grass grand prix field under the lights, mimicking the conditions riders and horses will face in Greece.
Following the competition in Wellington, the next Nations’ Cup event in North America will take place during the Spruce Meadows Masters tournament in Calgary, AB, from Sept. 8-12, 2004.

Another Strong Showing for Trussell & Royan II at CDI Dortmund Germany
Monday, March 15, 2004 Source : Dressage Canada Canada's representative to the World Cup Finals, Belinda Trussell and Royan II, put in another strong showing in Europe this past weekend, this time at the CDI Dortmund in Dortmund, Germany.
Competing in the Grand Prix (Qualifier for Kur), Trussell and Royan II rode to a score of 67.83% and 7th place in a strong field of international riders who included class winner Ann Kathrin Linsenhoff of Germany (71.38%) and second place finisher Isabel Werth (70.58%). Only one percentage pointed separated 3rd through 7th places making this a very tight class and Trussell's achievements all the more impressive.
"I am thrilled with my result in Dortmund," exclaimed a jubilant Trussell. "Top European riders compete at Dortmund and I was so pleased to place among such company!"
In the Grand Prix Kur, the duo earned 67.24% (11th place). The class was again won by Germany's Ann Kathrin Linsenhoff and Wahajama Unicef with a score of 77.42%.
After using the CDI Neumunster last month as a confidence builder for Royan II, Trussell's goal for Dortmund's outing was to add more expression in their tests. "That is exactly what Royan did, he was electric, expressive and it was a clean test," explained Trussell. "The increase in percentage points from the two shows was clear to what I need to do at the World Cup Finals. My goal for the Finals is to keep that expression we had in Dortmund and ride another clean test."
With only 3 weeks remaining before the World Cup Finals, Trussell will now focus on preparing her Kur. "My main focus for the last two shows has been to improve my Grand Prix and we have accomplished that, so now I have the time to focus on the freestyle." With Royan II feeling strong and fit, Trussell is looking forward to the World Cup Finals.
Trussell and Royan II were the winners of the Canadian League World Cup Finals held at the Royal Winter Agricultural Fair during November of 2003. This will be their first time representing Canada at the World Cup Finals. The pair were also part of the Canadian Team who competed at the 2003 European Dressage Championships (Hickstead, England) and earned Canada a berth to the 2004 Olympic Games.
Canadian Dressage News
Dressage Canada Announces 2004 Short and Long Listed Riders Friday, January 02, 2004 Dressage Canada is pleased to announce the riders who have obtained listing scores from the 2003 competition season. "Listing is a recognition of superior performance", explains Dressage Canada Chair John Harris", and is an accomplishment for the horse, the rider as well as the owners who support our riders and Canadian Dressage. "
Listing is the basis of how Dressage Canada selects horses for the Equine Canada Horse Maintenance Program. Dressage is allocated 20 spots and selection is carried out in descending order beginning with the Short List A horse owners, then to the Short List B horse owners and so on until all spots have been filled. "Even with increased listing threshold scores this year we still have over 30 listed horses eligible for the 20 spots," stated Harris "a very competitive year and an indication of future Canadian successes to come."

This policy is to encourage the support of owners of horse of international caliber that are available to the Team's listed riders/drivers with priority to short listed.
Owners of these horses may choose to receive from the Team an official donation receipt corresponding to the out-of-pocket expenses in maintaining and competing Team horses.
Prior to December 1 each year each discipline will submit to Equine Canada a list of horses complete with owner's name and address, which were available to the Team for competition for the calendar year. A copy of the criteria set by each Discipline is available. The number of horses to benefit from this is up to 20 horses for each of the FEI disciplines recognized by Equine Canada.
Those who incur the costs in providing horses to the Team and wish to take advantage of a donation receipt must substantiate their claim with receipts. Equine Canada may in turn be required to show these receipts during a Revenue Canada audit, in support of its issuance of tax receipts to the individual in question. Owners who wish to obtain a donation receipt should send a letter together with their receipts to Equine Canada national office prior to February 15 of the year following.
If the horse is owned by more than one owner, a donation receipt will be issued to each owner based on the amount each owner expended in maintaining said horse supported by receipts.
In addition to the process outlined in the foregoing each individual who may be entitled to a donation receipt should discuss this matter with their tax advisors to ensure it is beneficial to their own tax situation.
FEI WORLD CUP DRESSAGE CDI-W Maastricht, Netherlands, 11-14th December 2003
Germany's Heike Kemmer cemented her lead in the FEI World Cup Western European dressage league table with a close fought victory in Maastricht. Less than one point separated Kemmer and Bonaparte, a now nine-year-old Hannoverian gelding found by her father Joachim as a foal, from local heroine Anky van Grunsven riding Gestion Salinero. This was the Olympic champion van Grunsven's first international grand prix competition in a year where most of her time has been spent recovering from a serious thigh fracture sustained in a training accident at home. With Isabell Werth, Kemmer's team mate on the gold-medal winning German European squad, in third place on her young talent Satchmo, the top three riders performed at a very high level on exciting young horses.
Ground Jury President Stephen Clarke (GBR) commented: " The top three were very close. Bonaparte showed beautiful basic work with wonderful extended trots, but could show more expression still in piaffe and passage. Anky and Salinero showed brilliant interpretation of the music and Isabell's Satchmo was so expressive - the test had real highlights."
Again the season's high standard was maintained here at the first of three Dutch qualifying shows. With four qualifiers to go, the next takes place at Mechelen, Belgium, from 26-30 December.
