Britain to contest Samsung Super League Final

A quartet of British show jumpers will travel to sunny Spain next week to take part in the 2004 Samsung Super League Final to be held at the Barcelona Polo Club from 16th – 19th September.

British Olympians, who so narrowly missed out on a medal in Athens, Nick Skelton and Robert Smith will be joined by the younger family duo of Robert and Ellen Whitaker. Robert aged just 21 and his cousin Ellen aged 18 make the history books as the youngest representatives on a British Team fielded at a Super League Final.

Great Britain are currently lying in second place on the Super League Leader Board, trailing current leaders France by 11.8 points and ahead of Germany by just 0.2 points. However, placings in next weeks final will earn teams double points and with qualification for the 2005 Super League series to be decided, stakes will be high.

Irish rider Lennon announces details of his Euro1.7m deal

Dermott Lennon, the current show jumping World Champion, is once again making history by becoming the first horseman in his class to take part in a Middle East and Africa based competition. Famed for being the first Irish rider to achieve show jumping World Champion status, Lennon is in the UAE to compete in the Abu Dhabi International Show Jumping Competition (Jan. 7-9) and Dubai International Show Jumping Competition (Jan. 13-16).

On his arrival in the UAE, Lennon announced details of his recently finalised Euro1.7 million-plus sponsorship deal. Support for the world's best has been shown by Prince Sultan Bin Fahad Bin Nasser Bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia, who will be part owner of Lennon's young stallion, Belfast Knight. Princess Haya of Jordan has been supportive in assisting Lennon's visit to the UAE-based competitions.

Lennon is also receiving sponsorship support from Major General Doctor Abdulaziz Mirdad, Sun Microsystems Middle East and North Africa and its partner Mideast Data Systems, and KLM Cargo.

"The Middle East is home to a burgeoning show jumping market and I am thrilled to take part in such high-quality competitions," said Lennon. "The generosity of the sponsors is overwhelming and it is this level of support which demonstrates to me just how high a priority show jumping is on the sporting agendas in the Gulf."

In addition to the competitions, Lennon is visiting the Middle East to assess the potential of training up to 20 show jumping novices, preparing them for international competitions.

"Reaching the pinnacle of the show jumping field has required a great deal of hard work and dedication, but realizing my dream has encouraged me to give something back to the sportís beginners," said Lennon. "I am keen to foster the development of show jumping and taking on trainees from the Middle East and sharing my experience with them is just one way for me to accomplish this goal."

Lennon, who was crowned World Champion in September 2002 at the World Equestrian Games in Spain, will hold the title until 2006. Based on his achievement in becoming World Champion, Lennon automatically qualified for the Olympic Games in Athens this year.

"The costs are high to compete at an international level and I am thrilled to be able to support the development of such a professional. Dermott not only is dedicated to the sport but he is focused on training the next generation of potential champions," said Prince Sultan Bin Fahad of Saudi Arabia.

"For a long time my family has been part of the international show jumping circuit and we are pleased to be in a position where we can assist in raising the profile of the sport throughout the Middle East. It is a pleasure to provide sponsorship for such a fine horseman," said Abdulaziz Mirdad.

"Lennon's visit to the UAE will immeasurably raise the profile of show jumping in the Middle East," said Samir A. S. Mirdad, Public Sector Manager, Sun Microsystems Middle East and North Africa -- himself an avid show jumper, who placed seventh in the European Amateur Championship 2003.

Lennon set to strike gold again with Saudi sponsorship deal

By John Tynan - Irish Examiner

The man who brokered the recent €1.7m sponsorship deal for show jumper Dermott Lennon says he is planning to announce a further arrangement next week that will make the first “look small”.Samir Mirdad yesterday said the deal was with 15 members of the Saudi Arabian royal family and would see the world champion coaching riders and sourcing up to 40 top horses, worth in some cases up to €100,000.

"An advisor for the royal family had a one-hour meeting with Dermott yesterday. This is an exclusive deal, tapping into Dermott's expertise, and will run for the next three years. It will involve Dermott travelling to Saudi Arabia approximately four times a year," said Mr Mirdad.

Meanwhile, Lennon continues to strike gold, courtesy of his sponsors, adding joint victory in the puissance yesterday at the Abu Dhabi international show to a double on Wednesday.

The Banbridge rider is a guest of his new patrons - notably His Royal Highness Prince Sultan Bin Fahad Bin Nasser Bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia, computer giant Sun Microsystems, Dutch airline KLM in the Gulf state and gave them every confidence their largesse is well placed with his hat-trick of wins.

Yesterday's high-jump triumph saw the world champion jump 2.1m on I Caesar.

Earlier, Lennon provided a clear round on Impact to see his team finish fourth in the nations cup.

The first four teams finished equal on four faults, but the competition was decided on time.

"It was a one-round competition as most of the horses will jump in the grand prix (today)," said Lennon.

"I'm enjoying myself here, The horses are jumping very good so far."

On Wednesday, he teamed up with Impact to claim his first win, taking a 1.40m jump-off class. From a starting line-up of 44, nine made it through to the jump-off. Over a course that saw a number of fallers, Lennon was masterly, posting a four-second winning margin with the 14-year-old Dutch-bred gelding.

His brace came in the six-bar, with Lennon, riding I Caesar, joined by Princess Haya of Jordan and a rider from Qatar in the fourth round, after six other riders found the going too hot.

The Qatar rider was the first to fall by the wayside, with the fence now standing at 1.85m. After Lennon again showed his credentials, posting another clear it was left to Princess Haya to deny him, but she lowered the last pole to leave Lennon in the clear.

The show culminates in the grand prix today, with Lennon moving to Dubai next week.

Lennon recently secured one of the biggest sponsorship deals in show jumping history, worth in excess of €1.7m over five years with the prospect of further riches. The deal involved the Saudi prince taking a share in the stallion Belfast Knight, which Lennon rates highly.

lIRELAND'S pony show jumpers placed equal fourth in the nations cup at Wierdan, the Netherlands, last week. The team finished on 16 faults, in the nine-team competition. Victors the Netherlands B team scored eight to beat the Netherlands A team by four faults. Belgium/Luxembourg finished third on 13.

Carrying the Irish colours were Heather Purcell (Acapulco, 0/4) Benedict Kuhnle (KEC Archdeacon Clover, 0/8) Sarah Agnew (Tornado Gold, 16/16) and Nicola Fitzgibbon (Miami Bound, 4/0).

In Mumbai, India, the team of Peter Brady, Stephen Currie and Adrian Griffin were third behind India A and Hong Kong in the team event.

Adrian Griffin and Peter Brady also placed 6th and 7th, respectively, in the individual event.
